McDonald's in Australia: what to order and what it costs
What is McDonald's like in Australia?
McDonald's opened its first Australian restaurant in 1971. It's one of the best-known burger chains in the country, and it competes with Hungry Jack's, which is Burger King's name in Australia, and with home-grown chicken chains such as Red Rooster and Oporto.
Our Australian list has eight items across burgers and chicken. McDonald's restaurants are mostly run by franchisees, so real prices can differ from branch to branch. Read the figures below as a guide.
How much does McDonald's cost in Australia?
Here is the full list, cheapest first, with approximate dollar amounts:

The Big Mac and the Quarter Pounder with Cheese cost exactly the same, at A$10.75. The McCrispy is the most expensive item on our list.
Why is the McDouble cheaper than the Cheeseburger?
Look closely and you'll see something unusual. The McDouble has two beef patties, but it costs A$5.38, which is less than a Cheeseburger at A$6.90. It's even cheaper than a plain Hamburger at A$5.65.
We list the prices as our source gives them, and we can't explain the gap for certain. It may be a deal price, or the source may mix menu and promotion prices. If you're choosing between them, check the McDonald's app, because the McDouble may be the better buy.
Beef or chicken?
There are three chicken and fish items on the list:
- Filet-O-Fish: A$9.35
- McChicken: A$9.45
- McCrispy: A$11.30
The McCrispy costs A$1.85 more than the McChicken, and 55c more than a Big Mac. The Filet-O-Fish and the McChicken both cost less than a Big Mac. If you want a premium chicken burger and you're comparing prices, that's the gap to keep in mind.
How does McDonald's compare with Hungry Jack's?
Hungry Jack's is the Australian version of Burger King. On our Australian lists, a Hungry Jack's Cheeseburger is A$3.95, and a Whopper is A$11.93. That's A$1.18 more than a Big Mac.

What are the alternatives to McDonald's in Australia?
Australia has strong local chains at similar prices:

What is the cheapest way to fill up?
A few simple pairings show how the prices stack up on our list:
- A McDouble and a Hamburger: A$11.03, which is only 28c more than one Big Mac.
- Two Hamburgers: A$11.30, which is 55c more than a Big Mac.
- A McDouble on its own: A$5.38, the lowest price on the list.
The lesson is that a Big Mac is priced at about the same level as two small burgers. If you're hungry and on a budget, the McDouble is the item to check first.
Do you pay tax or tip at McDonald's in Australia?
No. Australian menu prices already include GST, the 10% goods and services tax. Tipping is voluntary, and nobody expects one at a McDonald's counter. Some cafés and restaurants add a surcharge on weekends and public holidays. You should be told about it clearly before you order.
Are delivery apps more expensive in Australia?

McDonald's doesn't publish one national price list in Australia. We used PriceMyMeal, a menu-price aggregator, and its McDonald's Australia page, which the source dates 13 August 2026. We fetched it on 8 September 2026. It isn't tied to one restaurant.
