Founded in 1965 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, by 17-year-old Fred DeLuca and family friend Peter Buck, who lent DeLuca $1,000 to open a sandwich shop to help pay for college. Originally called Pete's Super Submarines. Grew into the world's largest single-brand restaurant chain by location count, built on an unusually low-cost franchise model centred on made-to-order submarine sandwiches.
