Eating out in the Netherlands: prices, chains and what to expect
How much does eating out cost in the Netherlands?
The Dutch chain scene is small, but it has a few uniquely Dutch things, from wall-vending snack bars to bakery chains that sell whole fruit pies.
Across the 179 items we track for 9 Dutch chains, the middle price is €6.99, about $7.97. Leaving aside sauces, the cheapest things we list are €1.00 Subway cookies and side salads, and FEBO snacks at €1.60, such as a kaassoufflé or a satékroket. The dearest are large orders, including a €44.49 KFC bucket meal, a €29.99 MonChou vlaai at Multivlaai and a €27.50 steak menu at Loetje.
A burger on its own costs from €2.10 to €9.15 at McDonald's on our lists. A sit-down steak or pizza is more like €10 to €27.

A quirk worth noticing: New York Pizza lists a €7.99 25 cm pizza on "Discount Dinsdag", which means discount Tuesday. Weekly deals like this are common in the Netherlands.
Which chains are cheapest, and which cost the most?
If you rank chains by the middle price of the items we list, the snack bar comes first.
Cheapest end: FEBO (about €3.30), McDonald's (about €4.75), Subway (about €4.85) and KFC (about €7.50).
Priciest end: Multivlaai (about €14.99), Loetje (about €13.00), Domino's (about €12.49) and New York Pizza (about €10.35).
Multivlaai sells whole pies, so a single item can feed a family. Loetje is a sit-down restaurant, and Domino's is mostly pizzas for sharing. Compare formats, not just names.
Which Dutch chains are worth knowing?
- FEBO opened in Amsterdam in 1941 and is famous for its coin-operated, wall-vending snack counters.
- Loetje started in Amsterdam and grew into a nationwide restaurant chain known for steak and chips.
- New York Pizza began in 1994 and is one of the Netherlands' largest pizza delivery chains.
- Multivlaai is a bakery chain built around vlaai, a large traditional Dutch fruit pie linked with the southern province of Limburg.
What do the Dutch menu words mean?
- Kaassoufflé: a deep-fried snack filled with melted cheese.
- Satékroket: a croquette with a satay-style filling.
- Frikandel: a deep-fried minced-meat sausage, a classic Dutch snack.
- Kroket: a crisp, breadcrumbed croquette with a soft meat filling.
- Friet: chips or fries. Dutch fries are often served with mayonnaise.
- Uitsmijter: bread topped with fried eggs, ham and cheese.
- Vlaai: a fruit or cream pie, traditionally from Limburg.
- Biefstuk: steak.

How much does pizza cost in the Netherlands?
Pizza is a big part of Dutch chain dining, and the prices vary widely by size. New York Pizza's medium pizzas start at €7.00 and reach €13.49 for the signature New York Pizza. Its 5 Cheese pizza is €11.49. At Domino's, a Margherita is €10.99, a Perfect Pepperoni €11.99 and an Extravaganzza €16.49 on our list, which doesn't give the size. Its Detroit-style pan pizzas cost €16.99 to €18.99. Sizes differ between the two chains, so check the centimetres before you compare.
How much does vlaai cost?
Multivlaai sells whole pies, and the price depends on the filling. A roomvlaai (cream pie) is €13.49, an apple crumble vlaai is €13.99, a blueberry vlaai is €14.99 and a strawberry vlaai is €18.99. The most elaborate, the MonChou vlaai, is €29.99.
Is tax included in Dutch menu prices?
Yes. Prices include BTW, the Dutch VAT. Food and non-alcoholic drinks in restaurants are taxed at 9%. Alcohol is taxed at 21%. What you see on the menu is what you pay, apart from any optional tip.
Do you have to tip in the Netherlands?
No. Tipping is optional, and the Dutch won't expect it. If you enjoyed a sit-down meal, rounding up the bill or leaving 5% to 10% is a friendly thank-you. If the bill is €18.40, leaving €20 is perfectly natural. At snack bars and fast-food counters, no tip is needed.

Are delivery apps more expensive in the Netherlands?
Often. Apps such as Thuisbezorgd and Uber Eats can show higher prices than the counter, and they add delivery fees. Our delivery markup calculator shows the real extra cost.
How can you save money eating out in the Netherlands?
- Look for weekly deals. New York Pizza's 25 cm pizza is €7.99 on discount Tuesday. A regular 30 cm Margherita is €10.35.
- Try FEBO. A kaassoufflé is €1.60, and a "Kip Menu" is €4.90.
- Compare nugget boxes. At McDonald's, 6 McNuggets are €3.25 and 9 are €4.55, so the three extra nuggets cost €1.30.
- Share vlaai. A whole pie serves several people.
- Collect instead of delivery. You'll skip the app fees.

How accurate are these prices?
Dutch chains rarely publish one national menu. Prices vary by location, and delivery apps often differ from the counter. Our figures come from menu-price websites, checked between late August and October 2026.
Our Dutch lists are shorter than for some other countries, and several chains have only four items listed. Treat every price as a good, representative guide rather than a promise about your local restaurant. Each menu page shows when we last verified it, and you can read how we work on our methodology page.
One extra caution. For Burger King, our price source labels the figures as estimates modelled from other markets, not readings from a local menu, so that menu page carries an "Estimated prices" notice. Our KFC prices come from KFC's own pickup menu for Amsterdam Damrak, and our Subway prices from a list confirmed at a Rotterdam Subway in December 2025.
