Food & dining

Nigerian cuisine is built around hearty starches — jollof rice, pounded yam, eba, and fufu — paired with rich, often spicy stews like egusi and okra soup. Jollof rice in particular is a genuine point of national pride and rivalry, contested good-naturedly (and sometimes not so good-naturedly) with Ghana and other West African neighbours over whose version is best. Suya — spiced, grilled meat skewers sold from street stalls — is one of the country's most recognisable foods, alongside snacks like puff-puff and akara. Nigeria's fast-casual chains lean heavily toward chicken-and-rice combinations rather than burgers, with homegrown names like Chicken Republic and Mr Bigg's competing directly with, and often outselling, the American chains that arrived later.
