French cuisine holds UNESCO cultural heritage status, and Paris is widely credited as the birthplace of the restaurant as a format, in the late 18th century. Daily life still runs on the boulangerie — fresh bread, often bought twice a day, is a genuine habit rather than a novelty. Café culture is a social institution in its own right, not simply a coffee stop. Regional cooking (Provençal, Alsatian, Breton) remains distinct and a source of local pride, and even casual dining tends to keep the formal structure of a menu du jour. Wine is treated as integral to a meal rather than an optional extra. France also has its own homegrown fast-food genre entirely unrelated to Mexican tacos: the French "tacos," a grilled wrap of meat, fries, and cheese sauce that has become genuinely massive nationwide via chains like O'Tacos.
