Founded in 1958 in Wichita, Kansas, by brothers Dan and Frank Carney, college students who borrowed $600 from their mother to open the first location. The name came from the building's shape and the fact its sign only had room for nine letters. Became one of the first pizza chains to expand internationally, and popularised deep-dish "Pan Pizza" in the US in 1980.
