Founded by Harland Sanders, who began selling fried chicken from a roadside restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky during the Depression and perfected his "Original Recipe" of 11 herbs and spices through the 1940s. He started franchising in 1952 at age 62 after his original restaurant was bypassed by a new highway, using his "Colonel" persona — an honorary Kentucky title, not a military rank — as the brand's face. He sold the company in 1964 but remained its public spokesman until his death in 1980, and his image is still used in marketing worldwide today.

Which countries have KFC?

KFC is in 149 countries and territories, more than almost any other restaurant chain. It had 34,747 restaurants at the end of June 2026, up from 33,897 at the end of 2025, and it opened 660 new ones in just three months, in 55 different countries.

Where are most KFC restaurants?

KFC started in Corbin, Kentucky, with Colonel Harland Sanders, but today 90% of its restaurants are outside the United States. Its biggest operator is Yum China, which runs KFC across mainland China. Nearly every KFC, 99% of them, is run by a franchisee.

KFC belongs to Yum! Brands, which also owns Taco Bell. Together, Yum!'s brands have more than 64,000 restaurants in 157 countries and territories.

Is KFC the same everywhere?
