Beer and food are inseparable in German dining culture — the biergarten is a genuine social institution, not just a place to drink. Sausage varies enormously by region: currywurst is a Berlin street-food icon, bratwurst is grilled everywhere, and Bavaria has its own weisswurst tradition eaten only before noon by custom. Bread culture runs deep too, with hundreds of recognised bread varieties and a strong independent bakery (Bäckerei) tradition. Döner kebab, though associated with Turkey, was actually invented in Berlin by Turkish immigrants in the form now eaten worldwide, and is treated as a genuine German fast-food staple rather than an import. Italian food has also been thoroughly adopted — pizza and pasta chains are hugely popular nationwide.
