Which costs more, a Big Mac or a Whopper?
The Whopper costs more in eight of the nine countries where we have clean prices for both. The gap ranges from 9% in Ireland to 91% in the UK. Mexico is the exception: there, a Whopper with cheese is cheaper than a Big Mac.
The two burgers aren't quite the same size, which explains part of the gap. A Whopper has one large quarter-pound patty. A Big Mac has two smaller patties and an extra slice of bun.

The Mexican Whopper price is for the Whopper con queso, with cheese, because that's how the Mexican list shows it. The Thai prices come from a 2025 listing that we haven't been able to re-check yet. Our German McDonald's prices look high for a restaurant and may be delivery-app prices, so treat the German row as approximate.
How big is the gap in US dollars?
Converted to dollars, the gap is widest in the UK. A Whopper there costs about $10.59 and a Big Mac about $5.55, so you'd pay around $5 more for the Whopper.
In Italy the difference is about $3.50, and in the US it's $2.20. In Australia, Canada and Ireland it shrinks to under a dollar. In Mexico, the Whopper with cheese works out about 57c cheaper than the Big Mac.
Why does the UK gap stand out?
Mostly because the UK Big Mac is unusually cheap. At £4.19, about $5.55, it's one of the lowest Big Mac prices on our lists, below even the US. The UK Whopper, at £7.99, is close to Burger King prices elsewhere in Europe.
Both UK figures come from the same menu-price site and were checked on the same day. Prices still vary by branch, and city-centre or delivery prices can be higher.
What about the Netherlands and France?
We've left them out on purpose. Our Burger King prices for the Netherlands are labelled by their source as estimates modelled from other markets. Our French Burger King list only includes the Veggie Whopper, not the beef one. An earlier version of this guide used the Dutch figures and reported that the Whopper was cheaper there. That finding came from estimated data, so we've withdrawn it. Germany, which we also left out before, is now in the table, because our McDonald's prices there come from a real restaurant list.
Burger King doesn't trade under its own name in Australia, where it's called Hungry Jack's. The Whopper is the same burger, so we've included Hungry Jack's prices for Australia.
Which one is better value?
It depends on what you want. The Whopper is the bigger single patty, and in most countries you pay more for it. The Big Mac is the cheaper way to get a branded burger almost everywhere we have data.
If you're comparing meals, check the combo prices on each menu page. Meal deals can change the picture, and both chains run app-only offers that never appear on a printed menu.
Do these prices include tax?
Not everywhere. In the US and Canada, menu prices are before sales tax, which is added at the till. In the UK, Ireland, Italy and Mexico, the menu price already includes tax.
So a US Big Mac costs more than $5.99 at the till. In Texas, at an average rate of 8.2%, it comes to $6.48. Our sales tax calculator works it out for any state.
