The
McDonald's Big Mac and Burger King's Whopper are the two most direct competitors in fast food, sold in almost every country either chain operates in. We pulled the standalone, single-item price for each — not meal deals, not promotional bundles — from our own verified menu pages across the nine countries where we currently have clean data for both, to see how they actually compare.
In the United Kingdom, the Whopper runs £7.99 against the Big Mac's £4.19 — a nearly two-to-one gap, the widest of any country in our data. The pattern holds, though less dramatically, in most other markets we checked: in the United States the Whopper is $8.19 against a $5.99 Big Mac, in Germany it's €6.99 against €5.99, in Italy €9.60 against €6.50, and in Thailand ฿189 against ฿145. In Mexico the gap narrows to almost nothing — 64.19 pesos versus 59.25 — and in Ireland the two are close enough to call a tie, at €7.95 for the Whopper against €7.30 for the Big Mac.
The Netherlands is the one country in our data where the pattern flips entirely: the Whopper is actually cheaper, at €5.95 against the Big Mac's €7.80. We don't have enough additional markets showing the same reversal to say whether that's a genuine Dutch pricing quirk or simply where each chain happens to sit in its local pricing cycle at the time we checked — which is exactly why every figure here links back to a dated, sourced menu page rather than standing alone as a bare statistic.
What this doesn't tell you is which burger is "better value" — that depends on portion size, which varies by market in ways a simple price comparison can't capture, and on your own currency and local cost of living. What it does show fairly consistently is that Burger King's flagship product is positioned as the pricier of the two almost everywhere we have data for, not just in one or two markets.
