Food & dining

Colombia's geography — Andean highlands, Caribbean coast, Pacific coast, and Amazon basin — produces genuinely distinct regional cuisines rather than one national style. Bandeja paisa, the iconic loaded plate of beans, rice, ground meat, chorizo, fried egg, plantain, and arepa, comes from the Antioquia region but is eaten as a national dish. Arepas themselves are a daily staple, made differently than in neighbouring Venezuela. Ajiaco, a hearty chicken and potato soup, is a Bogotá specialty. Fried chicken chains — Frisby, Kokoriko — are arguably more culturally dominant in Colombian fast food than burger chains, and fresh tropical fruit juices (jugos) are ubiquitous at every price point.
