What everyday food costs in US dollars
Here are some everyday items from our menu pages, converted with the rates above. Each links to the full menu, and the last column shows when we checked the price.

| McDonald's Big Mac (US) | $5.99 | about $5.99 | Sep 2026 |
The smallest items, a coffee, a croissant or a snack, cost between about half a dollar and a little over two dollars. A quarter-chicken meal costs about $2.92 in Peru and $5.45 in Australia. Menu prices vary between branches, and several of these come from aggregators rather than official price lists, so treat the dollar figures as a guide.
How to convert a menu price in your head
You don't need an exact figure to decide what to order. The last column of the rates table gives a quick rule for each currency. Two examples:
- Pounds to dollars: multiply by about 1.33. A £10 meal is roughly $13.25.
- Pesos to dollars: for Mexico, divide by about 18. A MX$200 lunch is roughly $11.30.
For currencies with large numbers, such as the Colombian peso or the Nigerian naira, first knock off three zeros and think in thousands. COP 15,000 is "15 mil", and at about 3,300 pesos to the dollar that's roughly $4.54.
Paying for food abroad: card or cash?
The rate in this converter is close to the market rate. What you actually pay depends on how you pay:
- Card: your bank converts the payment, sometimes with a foreign transaction fee. Check whether your card charges one before you travel.
- "Pay in your own currency?": if a card machine offers to charge you in your home currency, choose the local currency instead. The conversion offered at the till often includes a markup.
- Cash: exchange bureaus, especially at airports, often give weaker rates than a bank card. Smaller, cash-only places are still common in some countries.
Converted price vs affordability
A converted price tells you what a meal costs a visitor. It doesn't tell you how affordable it is for locals, because wages differ so much. Take the Big Mac. In the UK it costs £4.19, about $5.55. At the UK minimum wage of £12.71 an hour, that's about 20 minutes of work.
In Mexico, the sources we checked disagree on the price, putting a Big Mac at between MX$69 and MX$129. The general minimum wage there is MX$315.04 a day, so even the lower price is about 22% of a day's pay, and the higher one about 41%. A burger that looks affordable in dollars is a much bigger purchase for a minimum-wage worker in Mexico. Our country guides for the UK and Mexico list the sources for these wages.
Frequently asked questions
- How accurate are these exchange rates?
- They are a dated snapshot, not live rates. We took them from central-bank sources on 25–26 September 2026, mainly the European Central Bank's reference rates. They're accurate enough to compare menu prices, but the rate you get from a bank or card will differ.
- How do I convert a menu price into US dollars?
- Multiply the price by the currency's value in dollars. A £4.19 Big Mac at about $1.33 to the pound is roughly $5.55. For currencies with big numbers, such as the Colombian peso, divide instead: COP 1,500 divided by about 3,300 is roughly 45 cents.
- Why does my bank or card give a different rate?
- Banks, card companies and exchange bureaus add a margin to the market rate, and some add a separate foreign transaction fee. That's why the rate on your statement is usually a little worse than the reference rate used here.
- Should I pay in the local currency or my own currency abroad?
- Usually the local currency. When a card machine abroad offers to charge you in your home currency, the conversion is done by the shop's provider and often includes a markup. Choosing the local currency lets your own card do the conversion, which is usually cheaper.
- Is a converted price a fair way to compare countries?
- It tells you what a visitor pays with their own money, but not how affordable food is for locals, because wages differ. A Big Mac costs about 20 minutes of the UK minimum wage, but between roughly a fifth and two-fifths of a day's minimum wage in Mexico, depending on the price source.
- Which currencies can I convert?
- The currencies of the 15 countries we cover: the US dollar, British pound, euro, Canadian dollar, Australian dollar, Mexican peso, Colombian peso, Peruvian sol, Thai baht and Nigerian naira.
- How often are the rates updated?
- We update the snapshot periodically and show the date on this page. Rates for currencies such as the naira and the Colombian peso can move quickly, so check a live source before exchanging money.
- Why do some pages on TheManued show a dollar figure next to the price?
- To make prices easier to compare, some pages add an approximate US dollar amount using the same snapshot rates as this converter. They are rounded guides, not exact conversions.
