Founded in 1940 in San Bernardino, California, by brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald as a barbecue drive-in, then reinvented in 1948 around a fast, assembly-line "Speedee Service System" built on burgers, fries, and shakes. Ray Kroc joined as a franchise agent in 1955, opened the Illinois location that became the template for the whole chain, and eventually bought the McDonald brothers out entirely. Now the world's largest restaurant chain by revenue, deliberately varying its menu by country.

McDonald's in Colombia: what to order and what it costs

What is McDonald's like in Colombia?

McDonald's opened its first restaurant in Colombia in 1995. It competes in a country with strong home-grown burger chains, such as El Corral and Presto, so it's interesting to see where it fits on price.

Our Colombian list has four items: a Big Mac, a chicken combo, a family box and a coffee. It's short, but each item tells you something. McDonald's restaurants are mostly run by franchisees, so real prices can differ from branch to branch.

How much is a Big Mac in Colombia?

A Big Mac costs COP 22,900, about $6.90. In Colombia, it's common to read prices in thousands, so think of it as "22 mil".

Here's the whole list, with approximate dollar amounts:

ItemPriceAbout
Tinto Grande (large black coffee)COP 4,000$1.21
Big MacCOP 22,900$6.92
McCombo Grande McPolloCOP 29,900$9.04
Cajota Familiar Clásica para CuatroCOP 79,900$24.16

The word combo means a main dish with a side and a drink. The McCombo Grande McPollo costs COP 7,000 more than a Big Mac alone. That's the price of a chicken sandwich meal, not a burger alone, so it isn't a direct comparison.

Is the family box good value?

The Cajota Familiar Clásica para Cuatro is a family box for four people. It costs COP 79,900, which works out at about COP 19,975 per person. That's less than the price of one Big Mac on its own.

That's a helpful way to look at it. If you're feeding a group, a box is usually a better deal than four separate meals. We don't have the full contents of the box on our list, so check the app to see exactly what's inside.

How much is a coffee?

The Tinto Grande costs COP 4,000, which is about $1.20. Tinto is Colombia's small black coffee, and it's drunk all day. Here's how that compares with other Colombian chains on our lists:

  • Tostao': a tinto is COP 1,500.
  • McDonald's: a large tinto is COP 4,000.
  • Starbucks: the coffee of the day is COP 7,565.
  • Juan Valdez Café: a medium latte is COP 10,000.

The McDonald's coffee costs about 2.7 times the Tostao' tinto, but it's a little more than half the price of the Starbucks coffee of the day. Sizes differ, so it's not a perfect comparison. See our Tostao' and Starbucks pages for more.

How does McDonald's compare with Colombian burger chains?

On our Colombian lists, El Corral sells a basic Corral burger for COP 14,000, and its half-pound Corralísima costs COP 24,000. That's COP 1,100 more than a Big Mac. Presto sells its La Propia combo for COP 18,900.

The Big Mac costs more than a basic Corral, but less than the Corralísima. The best comparison is a burger of the same size. See our full Colombian eating-out guide for more on how the chains compare.

Do you pay tax or tip at McDonald's in Colombia?

Restaurants in Colombia charge an 8% consumption tax, called impoconsumo, and many menus show prices with it included. Check the receipt if you're not sure. You'll sometimes see a suggested 10% tip on a sit-down bill, which is voluntary by law. At McDonald's counters, tipping isn't expected.

Are delivery apps more expensive in Colombia?

They can be. Delivery apps such as Rappi, which started in Bogotá, and Uber Eats often show higher prices than the counter, and they add delivery fees. Use our delivery markup calculator to see the real extra cost.

What is not on our Colombian list?

Our list is short, so many things aren't here, including breakfast items, desserts and the Happy Meal. Check the McDonald's app or the menu board before you order. To see how McDonald's works around the world, read our McDonald's guide.

How did we get these prices?

McDonald's doesn't publish one national price list in Colombia. We used a co.pricelisto.com listing for one restaurant in Envigado, near Medellín. The source dates its prices 15 December 2025, and we fetched it on 8 September 2026. So the prices are roughly nine months older than the day we checked them.

Prices from one restaurant, that long ago, are only a guide. Your local branch may charge more or less. Each page shows the date we last verified the menu, and you can read how we work on our methodology page.
