Founded in 1940 in San Bernardino, California, by brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald as a barbecue drive-in, then reinvented in 1948 around a fast, assembly-line "Speedee Service System" built on burgers, fries, and shakes. Ray Kroc joined as a franchise agent in 1955, opened the Illinois location that became the template for the whole chain, and eventually bought the McDonald brothers out entirely. Now the world's largest restaurant chain by revenue, deliberately varying its menu by country.

McDonald's in Ireland: what to order and what it costs

What is McDonald's like in Ireland?

McDonald's opened its first Irish restaurant in 1977. It now has one of the fullest menus on our Irish lists: 18 items across burgers, chicken, breakfast, McCafé coffee, desserts and drinks. That gives you a good look at how prices climb from a snack to a big burger.

Most McDonald's restaurants worldwide are run by franchisees, so prices can differ by branch. Read the figures below as a guide. We explain where they come from at the end.

How much do burgers cost at McDonald's in Ireland?

The range is wide, from €2.30 to almost €11:

BurgerPrice
Hamburger€2.30
Cheeseburger€2.60
Big Mac€7.30
Quarter Pounder with Cheese€7.40
Double Big Tasty€10.18
Big Arch€10.90

The jump from the Cheeseburger to the Big Mac is large. The Big Mac costs €4.70 more, which is nearly three times the price. If you only want something small, the Hamburger and Cheeseburger are by far the cheapest way to eat here. The Big Arch and Double Big Tasty are the top-end burgers, and both cost more than €10.

How does that compare with the neighbours? On our Irish lists, a Burger King Hamburger is €2.90, which is 60c more than McDonald's. A Whopper is €7.95, which is 65c more than a Big Mac. Read more on our Burger King Ireland page.

What chicken options are there?

There are three chicken items on our list:

  • McChicken Sandwich: €6.80
  • 9 Chicken McNuggets: €8.20
  • Spicy McCrispy: €8.55

The McNuggets work out at about 91c each. If you want chicken from another chain, a KFC Zinger Burger is €9.20 on our lists. See the KFC Ireland page for the full menu.

What does breakfast cost?

McDonald's Ireland lists three breakfast items:

  • Hash Brown: €2.90
  • Pancakes with Syrup: €5.20
  • Bacon & Egg McMuffin: €6.20

Add a coffee and you're near €10. That's worth comparing with a café breakfast, but a hash brown and a coffee is a cheaper way to start the day.

Is McCafé cheaper than Costa or Starbucks?

On our Irish lists, yes. McCafé prices are:

  • Americano: €3.40
  • Latte: €3.80
  • Cappuccino: €3.80

A Costa latte is €4.25, so McCafé is 45c cheaper. A Starbucks latte is €5.65, which is €1.85 more. The Irish sandwich chain O'Briens is cheaper still, at €3.00 for a latte.

If coffee is the main reason for your stop, that gap can matter over a week. See our Costa Coffee and Starbucks pages for the full lists.

What about desserts and drinks?

The dessert list is short and well priced:

  • Hot Apple Pie: €2.50
  • OREO McFlurry: €4.00
  • Coca-Cola Classic: €4.30

Notice that the Coca-Cola costs more than the McFlurry, and more than a Cheeseburger. That may be a large size or a delivery price, so check before you add a drink.

What is the cheapest way to fill up?

A few simple pairings show where the value is on our list:

  • Two Cheeseburgers: €5.20, which is €2.10 less than one Big Mac.
  • Cheeseburger and Hot Apple Pie: €5.10 for a savoury and a sweet.
  • Hamburger and an Americano: €5.70 for a light meal with a hot drink.

The pattern is clear. On this menu, the small burgers cost far less per burger than the big ones, so they suit a tight budget. If you're feeding a family, that's the place to start.

Do you pay tax or tip at McDonald's in Ireland?

Menu prices in Ireland include VAT. From 1 July 2026, Ireland permanently cut the VAT rate on restaurant meals and hot takeaway food from 13.5% to 9%. That doesn't force any restaurant to change its prices, and we checked these prices on 2 September 2026, after the change.

You don't tip at McDonald's counters or kiosks. For how bills work in Ireland generally, read our Irish eating-out guide.

How did we get these prices?

McDonald's doesn't publish a national price list in Ireland. We used MenuPriceToday, an Irish aggregator that says it compiles from delivery platforms and official sources, and we checked it on 2 September 2026. We cross-checked the Big Mac at about €7.30 against other Irish pricing.

Our own notes rate this as a lower-confidence source than a live branch listing, and it isn't tied to a single restaurant. So use these prices as a guide. Each page shows the date we last verified it, and you can read how we work on our methodology page. For McDonald's in other countries, see our McDonald's guide.
