Founded in 1964 in Boardman, Ohio, by brothers Forrest and Leroy Raffel, Arby's built its identity around roast beef sandwiches rather than the ground-beef burgers most competitors focused on. The name is reportedly derived phonetically from "R.B." — for Raffel Brothers.
