Founded in 1941 in Los Angeles by Carl Karcher, who started with a single hot dog cart bought with a $15 down payment and a loan against his car. Expanded into full drive-in restaurants through the 1940s, eventually splitting into the smaller, faster-format Carl's Jr. as a distinct brand from the original Carl's Drive-In Barbeque.
