Founded in 1940 in Joliet, Illinois, after Iowa-based father-and-son J.F. and Alex McCullough spent years perfecting a soft-serve ice cream formula and found a business partner willing to sell it exclusively as soft-serve rather than hardened ice cream. The Blizzard, its signature blended treat, launched in 1985 and reportedly became one of the most successful single product launches in fast-food history at the time.
