Founded in 1953 in Shawnee, Oklahoma, by Troy Smith, originally called the Top Hat Drive-In. One of the oldest surviving drive-in restaurant chains in America, Sonic kept the classic car-hop service format — carhops on roller skates delivering food to parked cars — even as most competitors abandoned it decades ago.
