Founded in 1964 in Hamilton, Ontario, by NHL defenceman Tim Horton, originally selling coffee and donuts. Horton died in a car accident in 1974, but the chain — later grown by business partner Ron Joyce — became Canada's largest fast-food chain and a genuine national symbol, as closely tied to Canadian identity as any brand in the country.
