Founded in 1979 in London by Tim Martin under the name J D Wetherspoon — reportedly named partly after a teacher who once told Martin he'd never make anything of himself. Known for converting unusual buildings (former banks, cinemas, churches, department stores) into pubs, and for keeping food and drink prices deliberately low compared to most competitors.
