Founded in 1921 in Wichita, Kansas, by Billy Ingram and cook Walter Anderson, widely credited as the first fast-food hamburger chain in America. Its small, steam-grilled "slider" burgers with holes punched in the patty for even cooking set a template that much of the modern fast-food burger format still follows; the company remains family-owned.
